Dartfish STEP is an instructional assessment tool, using tagged video with the Dartfish Connect Plus, the Dartfish Player, and dartfish.tv. It provides visual feedback, combined with written assessment of student teacher’s performance in a remote classroom setting, over the duration of their student teaching experience. Using the performance indicators and rating system established by the university’s College of Education, a performance tagging panel is created and used in the evaluation process of the teacher candidate.
“When they see it, they get it!”
There are several distinct advantages for use of STEP in student teacher evaluation. First and most importantly, the research shows that “self-analysis of teaching improves teaching performance and confidence.” The more frequent the feedback, the better. Now university evaluators can assess classroom performance from the convenience of their university or home office, saving both time and money with less travel to remote teaching sites. Because video taping of student teacher performance can be done frequently, more authentic visual feedback of performance is ascertained and assessed. This creates a visual track record of the teacher candidate’s performance over time. And in this process, valuable documentation is attained for research and publication, including Best Teaching Practices.
