DARTFISH: Advanced Video Analysis
By David da Silva

One Chinese proverb states, “Learning is like rowing upstream: not to advance is to drop back.” As of February 2006, the Evert Tennis Academy will be engaging our students to row upstream a lot faster as we integrate Dartfish into our tennis program. Dartfish is a coach friendly tool that offers a systematic way of communicating, analyzing and sharing video by placing it at the fingertips of coaches and athletes. In fact, almost 75% of Olympic contenders used Dartfish in 2004,150 of these contenders won medals. In this year’s Winter Olympics, Dartfish was used for the skiing, snowboard and figure skating events.

With Dartfish, the Evert Tennis Academy will be capturing live actions directly from camera to computer, offering instant visual feedback to coaches and athletes on-court, highlighting technical key moments of each stroke, and providing for an in depth analysis using world renowned tools. ETA athletes will be able to be given instant feedback of their game during various stages of their development as a visual library is built on a continual basis, giving each student the added advantage of seeing their progress over time.

Dartfish is an exciting program that has many possibilities of teaching. Think you have a forehand like Rafael Nadal? Well with Dartfish it is possible to compare how your killer forehand would fare with Rafael on the same screen at the same time using Simulcam TM, one of the exciting analysis tools. Think you move faster than the great Roger Federer coming into the net? Stromotion TM gives you an opportunity to reveal every step and every movement you take as a still shot on screen. Ever wondered how high you get off the ground on your serve or what angle your elbow lies in relation to your shoulder? Dartfish can show you exactly this information using a variety of drawing tools that make it easy for you to understand. Plus you can have all your strokes emailed to you in no time, or you can have a personalized high quality DVD or CD created for you.

The invisible is now visible as coaches and athletes prepare to learn in a way that avoids guessing and opinion out of feedback.
