Grass Roots Sport Goes High Tech with Dartfish

It is not that long ago that a video camera and laptop were the tools of trade of the elite coach and seen as taboo by those plying their trade in the local club levels. Not anymore according to the members of Parkdale Cricket Club who have been using Dartfish Team Pro to improve their skills and decision making in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association in Victoria Australia.
According to coach James Seeary, Dartfish has been an outstanding way of fast tracking his young players. Parkdale has essentially been using Dartfish in three ways:
1. Live delay – to allow players to have an instant replay of their bowling action or shot execution and confirm the message from the coach
2. Side by side analysis – Players have used this for injury prevention, to make comparisons from different time periods and also as a way for the group get information and be “on the same page” as the coach. Seeary says that by using group sessions with the video image projected onto a wall he can make sure that all athletes are “buying into his coaching principals”, that allows them to help each other within the group sessions, which really means, “I have a whole bunch of assistant coaches looking out for each other. When your coaching40 to 50 blokes at a time, this is vital.”
3. Game analysis – The Parkdale boys also use Team Pros tagging functionality to break up pieces of a game that are important to them. “The live encoding is very important because six hours of cricket would take a long time to compress and of course I needed an external hard drive, but Dartfish instantly compresses six hours of game time down to about 10 gig which I can manage on my laptop. I give the boys a copy of their innings and bowling spells but we also use it to analyse opposing players who may have done well against us previously. I have no doubt that using Dartfish has given the club the edge in the last two grand final wins.
