The Medalist Club, Alabama Gymnastics team's booster organisation, recently purchased a state-of-the-art digital video analysis system, which includes the Dartfish Pro Suite video analysis software, 3 Sony high definition camcorders, 3 computers with high definition recording and playback capabilities, as well as 3 high definition display panels.
The video system proves to be a tremendous asset to the training programme, allowing coaches and athletes to go much more in depth, to literally break a routine down second by second. The system has many playback and analysis options that are in use every day in practice and allows the coaches and gymnasts constant feedback.
"It is an unbelievable tool in the gym", Bryan Raschilla Crimson Tide assistant coach said. "It's like having 3 extra coaches."
Coaches are not the only ones to benefit from the new video analysis software. Gymnasts can now review each skill or routine as soon as they come off the equipment.
"It gives us the opportunity to really pay attention to our corrections and see them visually", senior All-American Kassi Price said. "It's much easier to make a correction when you can see what you're doing wrong. It's been amazing and it's really helped my gymnastics."
Ashley Priess, sophomore All-American, adds. "It's a huge help for us. It allows you to make corrections quicker, which ultimately helps you improve faster and more efficiently."
In addition to a variety of playback options, the Crimson Tide coaches can also compare and contrast routines using a variety of tools within the Dartfish Pro software.
The system's SimulCam and StroMotion features, which were both used at the 2008 Olympic Games, allow coaches to really get in-depth and break-down technique and skills.
With SimulCam coaches can take a video of two different gymnasts doing the same skill and play them back simultaneously or they can take a gymnast and show them doing the same skill done at two different times and compare the two.
By taking a high definition snapshot every millisecond of a routine or skill, the StroMotion feature allows the coaches and gymnasts to review a routine or skill down to the smallest fraction of a second.
Both features are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Alabama's new systems, which is giving Crimson Tide a big boost as it goes through pre-season training, preparing for another championship run.
