USA Swimming and Dartfish on the way to Athens

The Dartswim program (www.dartswim.com), a partnership between Dartfish USA and USA Swimming (hence "Dartswim"), is progressing well on the road to Athens.

The United States Swimming team has been the #1 nation in Olympic competition for over 40 years, with the 33 medals won in Sydney representing over a third of the country's total medal count in 2000. The Dartswim technology will be part of the resources applied to helping coaches and athletes achieve that same level of success at this summer's Olympic Games. Digital video feedback and evaluation using this cutting edge technology will be an integral part of the team's competition support and preparation for Athens.

Dartswim technology has been incorporated into all National Team camps and is currently used to share video content and evaluate technique by the coaches of 92% of National A Team members (top 8 in the world) and 85% of National B Team members (top 16 in the world). "This extensive adoption rate by our national team coaches over a period of less than 18 months is unprecedented", says John Walker with USA Swimming's National Team Division.

Swimming is a technique intensive sport and extremely fine differences in movement and body position are the only factors that separate a great swimmer and an Olympian. Video is one of the most effective tools to evaluate and improve a swimmer's technique, however video of elite athletes swimming (especially underwater) has been very difficult for USA Swimming members to get access to and use effectively. Using the Dartfish software as a technology frame work, the Dartswim program is being developed as a video distribution and analysis system for all USA Swimming members (300,000+). Over 20 of the world's greatest swimmers have signed on to share their championship technique through the Dartswim program.

USA Swimming and Dartfish USA worked together to create an affordable and easy to use athlete CD with the tools and basic instruction necessary for a swimmer or coach to build a personal digital library and do extensive analysis on their home computer. The core software technology developed by Dartfish USA is simple enough that a 12 year old age group swimmer can manage a large digital technique library effectively and in 30 second do analysis and effects that only five years ago it would have taken hours of a professional TV crew to accomplish. The frame work for on-line distribution/sharing of the digital video is also being incorporated into the new USA Swimming website (www.usa-swimming.org) and www.dartswim.com which will be released in early June.
