Archiving or backing-up your video files

Video files contain a lot of information and therefore take up a lot of space on your hard drive. Each training session adds new video clips and, sooner or later, you will have the problem of lack of space on your hard drive. You may also want to back up important clips.

If your computer is equipped with a CD or data DVD writer, Dartfish offers two solutions to these problems:

Backup: The backup functionality protects against loss of video files by corruption or accidental deletion by enabling you to copy video clips to CD or DVD. Restoring backed up video clips returns them to the same folder where they were backed up from and they will retain their category/value information. The backup process leaves copies of the video clips on your hard drive.

Archive: Use the Archive option when you want to free space on your hard disk; the archive enables you to build your own video clip library on CD/DVD. The selected video clips are copied to CD/DVD and removed from your disk. However, a copy of the File Name/Categories/values is left on your hard disk and will appear in Dartfish's Items List. Although an archived video clip cannot be displayed without being restored first, you can work with the archived video clips as if they were still on your hard disk. If required, your software will prompt you to restore a clip.

Although the end results are different, the processes of archiving or backing up are almost identical; using the Library module's Tray to organize video files and start a wizard to guide you through the steps of either process.
